Dear Adam,
About a year ago, I heard you on Triple J speaking to Ronan Sharkey about Condoleezza Rice’s upcoming speech at Sydney University. I had noticed that Mr. Sharkey was trying to preach his viewpoints about Ms. Rice's political opinions to anyone who was looking to attend the forum.
When he spotted you, it appeared that he thought that as a previous Triple J host, you would share the same point of view. It seemed to me that you did not, or even if you did, it was more likely that you were interested to see what Ms. Rice had to say as opposed to go and abuse her views, as it seemed that Mr. Sharkey would have done had he been allowed to enter the lecture hall.
I just wanted to say, “good on you” for throwing it back into his face when he tried to use your stint at Triple J as a way of saying you agree with him.
I’ve listened to Triple J since 1995 but that does not mean that I agree with the opinions of the general listening population. In fact, I turn off the radio when Hack comes on. I was becoming quite annoyed with Mr. Sharkey up until he spoke to you. I believe that your comments to him were justified and they pointed out an immaturity on his side.
I realise that this is a bit late in regards to when the original event occurred. Unfortunately I didn’t know of a way to let you know until now.
As an avid Triple J listener, I found that what you did was (for want of a better word) honourable and showed true character of who you are. I have listened to Triple J for quite some time but found that you were one of the better hosts in terms of intelligence, wit and demeanour. For the record, Triple J hasn’t been the same since.
I met you during Sleek Geek Week in Melbourne in 2004. Beforehand, I was apprehensive to go up to you at the end and meet you. Thankfully, I made sure I did. You don’t have the persona that goes with being well-known. Hopefully one day I will be able to hear you speak at another event.
Yours faithfully,
Samantha Henderson.
